The problem
What makes it hard
Generator protection, excitation equipment, static frequency converters and start-up and synchronisation equipment produce an interference environment worse than ordinary switchgear, with the difference that the equipment sits close together. Here it is not enough for fiber to run between buildings — it is needed between cabinets in the same room.
Short distance, high interference. That means the optical budget is not the constraint; the routing is. A 30 m multimode link has 29 dB of margin and can still fail because of a fiber pinched in a cabinet penetration.
How it is built

Environments
Environments with the same problem
The technology is the same; the buying process usually is not.
- Substation with teleprotectionDelay and channel asymmetry decide whether the protection trips correctly — the link is part of the protection scheme, not a service to it.
- Wind farmLong loops and lightning exposure, with maintenance access measured in hours of travel.
- Switching station with SCADA releaseMeasurements must leave the station without opening a way back in.
- Railway signalling installationVibration and a 40-year installation lifetime set the requirements, not the data rate.

If yours is close to this one but not the same, that difference is usually where the design decisions are. Tell us what it looks like.
