The problem
What makes it hard
Each turbine is a 100-metre lightning conductor with a 33 kV switchgear at its foot. The park’s internal network gathers 20–80 turbines to a collection substation, and an export line runs from there to the connection point. Both the overvoltage protection and the selective line differential protection on the export line need communication that does not conduct.
The fiber lies in the same trench as the medium-voltage cable, and in wind power it often lies inside it. There is then no physical route separation to build redundancy on: the same excavator takes both.
How it is built
Teleprotection between two substations
The optical budget and the delay budget are calculated together, because the link is part of the protection.

Environments
Environments with the same problem
The technology is the same; the buying process usually is not.
- Substation with teleprotectionDelay and channel asymmetry decide whether the protection trips correctly — the link is part of the protection scheme, not a service to it.
- Link between buildings over public landThe operator’s later cross-connects eat your budget after handover, which is why the acceptance measurement matters.
- Railway signalling installationVibration and a 40-year installation lifetime set the requirements, not the data rate.
- Power plant with high electromagnetic interferenceImmunity is the requirement, and it is the one figure the datasheet is expected to answer without discussion.
