Not through the network – through the air, and through the power line. Every monitor, keyboard, printer and cable emits electromagnetic signals that can be reconstructed into the information being processed: from a neighbouring room, from the street, without malware and without a trace. TEMPEST is the NATO standard for stopping it. RÖS – röjande signaler – is the Swedish one. Fibersystem is certified against both.
Why protect against it?
Historically only nations could conduct emission surveillance, and defence agencies were the targets. Technology has become cheap and accessible – today civilian organisations can both conduct and fall victim to it. Any organisation handling classified or high-value information should treat emanation security as part of its baseline, alongside network and physical security.
Four common emission types
- Radio emissionoccurs unintentionally in any device containing a radio transmitter and can spread over very long distances.
- Emission crosstalksignals transferred between circuits through electromagnetic coupling, often the root cause of leakage.
- Keystroke emissioneach keypress generates a pulse that can be intercepted and used to reconstruct what was typed, radiated through air or conducted through cables.
- Video emissionleakage from the signal path between computer and monitor, allowing screen contents to be reconstructed.
Emissions propagate both conducted (power and telecom lines, pipes) and radiated (through the air) – which is why protection must be engineered into the equipment itself.
