Data hall and cross-connect room

Every passive component costs decibels, and a 1x8 switch costs up to 1.5 dB that nobody budgeted for.

The problem

What makes it hard

Here fiber is not a security measure but the infrastructure itself. What matters is A/B paths and the ability to move a whole trunk between two destinations without touching a single patch cord.

Insertion loss accumulates quickly. A 1x8 costs up to 1.5 dB typically, and an MPO trunk with two through-connections costs another 1.5–2 dB. On an 850 nm link with perhaps 8 dB of total budget, that is half the budget before the fiber has even started.

How it is built

A/B path with an optical switch

Two fibers in one cable is one path, and duplicated equipment on a shared breaker is not redundancy.
