How it works

An optical switch selects between two physical paths. The switching is purely optical, which is what makes it protocol-independent and transparent to data rate.

What the switch does not do

It does not monitor light levels. It does not detect a failure and switch by itself unless something tells it to. It is not a security boundary. It costs between 0.3 and 1.5 dB depending on port count, and a web interface on it is an attack surface that belongs on a separate management network.
