Codec switch: several networks, one set of peripherals

The control path sits outside every network, and the switch is sealed for exactly that reason.

How it works

One set of video conference peripherals — display, camera, microphone, audio unit — reaches one of several codecs, one per network, through a sealed switch.

The control path sits outside every network

That is the property that makes the switch a domain boundary rather than a video matrix. If any of the connected networks could change the selection, the separation would be a setting.

Physically disconnected, not disabled

The codecs that are not selected are not reachable. Disabled in software is still connected, and a switch that relies on software state has moved the boundary into the software.

Audio is a direction problem

A loudspeaker and an earphone are the same transducer run backwards. That is why the audio unit has a diode function, and why the microphone path deserves its own analysis rather than being treated as part of the display.
